Introduction
walk-in shower is the most-requested upgrade in South Florida bathroom remodeling. Homeowners want more space, cleaner lines, and a shower that actually fits the way they live. Custom tile, frameless glass, and curbless entries have replaced the old tub-and-curtain setup in thousands of Miami-Dade homes.
Haven Home Remodeling Group builds walk-in showers from the floor up — waterproof membrane, tile layout, glass enclosure, and all fixtures. Every project is permitted. Every crew is in-house.
General contractor Aldo Dellamano has led South Florida construction for over 30 years. If you are comparing contractors for a walk-in shower install, this guide covers what the job really involves — materials, code, process, and cost factors — so you can make a confident choice.

Walk-in shower installs in South Florida must follow the Florida Building Code, which sets rules for wet area sealing, tile substrate, and plumbing rough-in. Miami-Dade and Broward County fall inside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ). That zone adds extra rules for moisture control in any remodel touching exterior walls. Haven pulls more than 1,500 building permits per year across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie counties — every job by the book.
Our Bathroom Remodeling team handles every phase in-house. No subcontractors touch your job. This matters because bathroom tile work is all about sequence. The liner goes down before the mortar bed. The membrane laps the wall before the backer board. One skipped step means a leak — and South Florida's humidity finds every gap fast.
“Haven pulls more than 1,500 building permits per year across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, and St.”
Haven completes more than 1,200 roofing and bathroom remodeling projects per year. Our warranty callback rate stays under 3%. That number reflects craft, not luck. It reflects crews who have tiled hundreds of shower floors and know how to read a slope.
What You Get
What's Included in a Walk-In Shower Install
Schluter Waterproof Membrane
Schluter Systems KERDI membrane bonds directly to the substrate. It seals the pan, walls, and corners before any tile goes down. This stops moisture from reaching the frame.
Custom Tile Work
We set porcelain, ceramic, or natural stone tile in a full mortar bed. Large-format tiles (24x48 and up) are common in modern walk-in showers. Grout joints are sealed and color-matched.
Frameless Glass Enclosure
Frameless glass panels use heavy 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass with polished hardware. No bulky aluminum frame to trap soap scum. The look is clean and open.
Linear Drain
A linear drain runs along one wall instead of sitting in the floor center. It lets you slope the entire floor in one direction. This is the standard choice for curbless walk-in showers.
Rainfall and Multi-Function Heads
Ceiling-mount rainfall heads need a 1/2" supply line and enough water pressure to perform. We rough-in the plumbing correctly so you get full flow — not a trickle from an undersized pipe.
Niche and Bench Options
Built-in niches and benches are framed and tiled during the same install. Adding them later means cutting into finished tile. Plan them upfront and the cost is minimal.

Haven Walk In Shower in South Florida — waterproofing membrane installation on shower walls
A curbless walk-in shower has no step at the entry. Water stays in the shower by slope alone. The entire floor must pitch toward the drain at 1/4" per foot. This sounds simple. It is not. A standard shower pan has a built-in slope to a center drain. A curbless floor must be built up with a mortar bed shaped by hand to hit that pitch across the full area.
The liner or membrane must run under the entire mortar bed and lap up the walls at least 3 inches. This protects the subfloor and wall frame. In South Florida, where slab-on-grade construction is the norm, the plumber must core the slab to set the drain at the right depth. That depth depends on the tile thickness, mortar bed depth, and membrane layer. Get it wrong and your floor either pools or drains wrong.
“The liner or membrane must run under the entire mortar bed and lap up the walls at least 3 inches.”
Curbless showers also pair well with Accessibility Upgrades. A zero-threshold entry meets ADA Standards for roll-in shower access. If you or a family member uses a mobility aid, curbless design removes the biggest trip hazard in the bathroom. Haven builds these to code whether they are an ADA project or just a modern style choice.
South Florida Humidity Changes the Rules
South Florida's year-round heat and humidity mean any moisture gap in a shower will grow mold fast. Full sealing under the tile — not just a vinyl liner — is the only method we use.
Process
Walk-In Shower Installation Process
- 1
Free Estimate and Design
We measure the space, review the plumbing rough-in, and walk you through tile, glass, and drain options. You get a written scope and price before any work starts.
- 2
Permit Pull
Haven pulls the building permit. Most bathroom remodel permits in Miami-Dade are issued within a few business days. No permit means no final inspection — and no protection if you sell the home.
- 3
Demo and Rough-In
We remove the old tub or shower surround down to the studs and slab. The plumber sets the new drain, adjusts the supply lines, and cores the slab if needed for a curbless floor.
- 4
Waterproof Membrane and Mortar Bed
Schluter KERDI membrane goes on first. Then the mortar bed is floated and sloped to drain. This is the most important day of the project. Everything after depends on this step being right.
- 5
Tile, Glass, and Fixtures
Tile is set, grouted, and sealed. The frameless glass enclosure is templated and installed. Fixtures, rainfall head, and any bench or niche get finished. Most walk-in shower installs are done in 3 to 7 days.
Side-by-Side
Framed vs. Frameless Glass Enclosures
| Feature | Framed Glass | Frameless Glass |
|---|---|---|
| Glass thickness | 1/4" (thinner, needs frame support) | 3/8" – 1/2" tempered (self-supporting) |
| Appearance | Aluminum rails visible on all edges | Clean sight lines, hardware only at hinges |
| Upkeep | Soap scum builds in aluminum channels | Easy wipe-down, no hidden channels |
| Cost | Lower upfront cost | Higher upfront, better long-term value |
| Resale appeal | Standard look | Preferred by buyers in South Florida market |

Porcelain is the top choice for South Florida walk-in showers. It is dense, holds up to humidity, and comes in large formats that reduce grout lines. Large-format porcelain planks (12x48 or 24x48) give a seamless stone look without the upkeep of real marble. Grout lines collect mold in high-humidity climates. Fewer lines mean less scrubbing.
Natural stone like travertine and marble is popular in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove. It looks beautiful. It also needs sealing every year in a wet area. If you skip that step, the stone absorbs moisture and stains. Porcelain that mimics stone is a smart middle ground. You get the look without the upkeep.
“For floor tiles in a curbless shower, smaller mosaic tiles (2x2 or penny tile) give more grout lines and better grip.”
For floor tiles in a curbless shower, smaller mosaic tiles (2x2 or penny tile) give more grout lines and better grip. Slip resistance matters. Florida code requires floor tiles in wet areas to meet DCOF (dynamic coefficient of friction) minimums. We spec only tiles that pass. Mixing a large-format wall tile with a mosaic floor tile is a common and practical design choice.

Haven builds walk-in showers across every part of South Florida. In coastal communities like Miami Beach Walk-In Shower and Aventura Walk-In Shower, high-rise condos need a contractor who understands HOA rules and shared-wall plumbing. We coordinate with building management and pull the right permits. Salt air in these buildings also demands marine-grade hardware on glass enclosures.
In the urban core, Miami Walk-In Shower projects range from Brickell condos to Wynwood bungalows. Hialeah Walk-In Shower and Doral Walk-In Shower clients often want large-format tile and rainfall heads to match newer home builds in those markets. These are full gut-and-rebuild jobs where we demo the old surround, relay the plumbing, and deliver a walk-in shower that looks like it belongs in the home.

Suburban Miami-Dade homeowners in Kendall Walk-In Shower, Cutler Bay Walk-In Shower, North Miami Walk-In Shower, and Miami Lakes Walk-In Shower often pair a walk-in shower install with a Tub-to-Shower Conversion in a second bathroom. South of the metro, Homestead Walk-In Shower projects serve newer subdivisions and older ranch homes alike. Historic neighborhoods in Coral Gables Walk-In Shower — Old Cutler, Riviera, Cocoplum — call for upscale tile and custom glass that matches the architecture. For full gut projects in any of these areas, our Full Bathroom Remodel service covers every surface from floor to ceiling.
